Iconic Outlander Filming Locations: Follow in the footsteps of Jamie and Claire at Lallybroch (Midhope Castle), Blackness Castle, Linlithgow Palace (Wentworth Prison), Doune Castle (Castle Leoch), Newtonmore Highland Folk Museum, Tibbermore Church and Falkland. For avid Outlander fans, this is one of the most complete of our private multi day tours.
The Real Craigh na Dun: Head into the wild Highlands to the location of the standing stones known as Craigh na Dun, then visit Clava Cairns—5,000-year-old standing stones and tombs, and Diana Gabaldon’s favourite place in Scotland.
Jacobite History at Culloden: Pay your respects to the gallant Highlanders who charged into oblivion at the battlefield of Culloden in 1746.
Overnights in Callander and Inverness: Stay in Callander, close to Callander Woods where most of the outdoor scenes in season 5 were filmed, and in Inverness. The tour can be done in reverse, and we can add places you really want to see.
As we follow in the footsteps of Jamie and Claire, our first port of call for a photo opportunity is Hopetoun House, home of the traitorous Duke of Sandringham in the series. Moving on in the same estate is Lallybroch (Midhope Castle). It is a ruin and you can’t get inside, but it’s easily recognisable—and in the grounds, we’ll guide you to where Red Jamie hid from the Redcoats.
Onwards to the intimidating Blackness Castle, which doubled as Fort William in the programme. Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots, is next—this was Wentworth Prison. A wee break from Outlander as we visit the stunning Kelpies, before the highlight of the day: Castle Leoch—Doune Castle—ancestral home of Clan MacKenzie.
We head north into the wild Highlands to the location of the standing stones known as Craigh na Dun. There are no stones on the hill, but it is undoubtedly the location. There is evidence of a previous stone circle, and you do feel an eerie awkwardness roaming this wilderness, as if you are being watched!
From here, Queen’s View before lunch at the House of Bruar (think of a countryside Harrods)—the food is gorgeous! We continue north to Clava Cairns, 5,000-year-old standing stones and tombs and Diana Gabaldon’s favourite place in Scotland. We finish the day paying our respects at the battlefield of Culloden (1746).
A morning departure takes us down the main spine of Scotland to Newtonmore Highland Folk Museum (the MacKenzie village and the ‘waulking the wool’ scene). A welcome break in the spa town of Pitlochry before Tibbermore Church, where we witnessed the witch trial of Claire and Geillis Duncan—you too can bear the devil’s mark whilst standing in the dock.
One of my favourite places in Scotland is next: the beautiful medieval town of Falkland, which doubles as Inverness in the show. Stand where Frank saw the ghost of Jamie by Claire’s guest house—you can even have a coffee in the shop where Claire longed for a vase! Other days can be added if you wish to travel deeper into the Highlands and perhaps the Islands.
